Deep Water Within - A Guided Practice for Accessing the Wise Therapist Self
Professionally Produced MP3 Recording
Deep Water Within is a guided light-hypnosis, somatic resourcing, and imagery practice created for therapists, counsellors, and mental health professionals who work with trauma, complex trauma, and relationally demanding clinical material.
This recording is the Session Two guided experience from the Steady in Your Seat experiential supervision and consultation series. It builds on the grounding work of Session One by helping therapists move from the busy, worried, analytical surface of the mind into a deeper and more expansive inner space—the place where compassion, perspective, clinical intuition, and the wise therapist self can become more available.
Using the imagery of sitting by water, this practice invites you to notice the choppy, busy, rippling surface of the mind while also sensing the calm, still, quiet water underneath. The surface may be filled with thoughts, questions, analysis, pressure, or the wish to get things right. Beneath that movement, however, there may also be deep water within: a quieter place that can pause, listen, widen, and know how to navigate.
The practice gently supports therapists in relating differently to the parts of themselves that worry:
What if I get this wrong?
I need to do more.
I’m not doing enough.
I should know more.
I should be something I’m not.
Rather than trying to push these thoughts away, the recording invites you to notice that this part of the therapist self may be trying so very hard because it also cares deeply. From the deeper water within, you are guided to meet that striving, uncertain, or over-responsible part with warmth, reassurance, and compassion.
This recording may help you:
- Create more space around pressure, urgency, and self-doubt
- Access a wider and more reflective clinical perspective
- Deepen trust in your own clinical intuition
- Meet therapist uncertainty with more kindness
- Listen for the next wise step rather than forcing an immediate answer
- Stay connected to yourself while remaining relationally present with the client
Wisdom does not always arrive as a big answer. Sometimes it arrives as a pause, a breath, a question, a sense of pace, or enough space to listen a little longer.
How this recording fits within the Steady in Your Seat series
Steady in Your Seat is a three-part experiential practice and consultation series designed to support therapists in building grounded presence, embodied self-awareness, compassion, and clinical clarity in trauma work.
The three-session arc is:
Session One: Landing in Your Seat
A grounding and resourcing practice for returning to the body, breath, chair, and therapist role.
Session Two: Deep Water Within
A guided practice for accessing the wise therapist self, widening perspective, and meeting therapist uncertainty with compassion.
Session Three: Staying Steady in the Storm
A practice for remaining rooted, open, and clear when clinical material becomes intense or relationally charged.
This second recording supports the movement from grounding into deeper listening: Pause. Soften. Widen. Listen. Discern.
When to use this recording
You may find this practice helpful:
Before beginning a day of client sessions
After a session that has left you questioning yourself
When you feel pressure to know, fix, rescue, or do more
When you feel caught in overthinking or clinical uncertainty
When you want to reconnect with your own compassion and intuition
As an ongoing reflective and resourcing practice
You are welcome to listen more than once. Each time you return, you may notice something different, pick up something new, or become more familiar with the pathway from the busy surface mind into the deeper water within.
Suggested use:
Listen in a quiet, comfortable place where you are unlikely to be interrupted. You may sit in a supportive chair or lie down, depending on what feels right for you. Headphones are recommended for a more immersive listening experience.
Please do not listen while driving, operating machinery, walking in a setting that requires your full attention, or doing anything that requires alertness and quick response.
There is no one right way to experience this recording. You may tune in closely, allow your mind to wander, notice only certain words or images, or simply listen from the surface. You can engage with the practice in whatever way feels supportive for you today.
