Becoming the Mountain - A Guided Practice for Staying Steady in the Storm
MP3 Recording | Running Time: 25 minutes, 56 seconds
Becoming the Mountain is a guided light-hypnosis, somatic resourcing, and imagery practice created for trauma therapists, counsellors, and mental health professionals working with trauma, complex trauma, and relationally demanding clinical material.
This recording is the Session Three guided experience from Steady in Your Seat, an experiential supervision circle for therapists who want to feel more grounded, embodied, and steady in the work.
In complex trauma therapy, there are moments when the relational field becomes intense. A client may feel urgent, ashamed, angry, afraid, collapsed, mistrustful, disappointed, or dysregulated. They may need things to change quickly. They may feel hurt by something we unintentionally said, or something we missed. The work can become charged, thick, stormy, and hard to read.
As therapists, we can feel that weather too. We may feel pulled to rescue, fix, explain, defend, appease, withdraw, overwork, or get things right very quickly. We may notice thoughts such as, “I’m not doing enough,” “I need to make this better,” or “I’ve done something wrong.”
This practice offers the image of the mountain as a way of returning to rooted, boundaried, relational presence. The mountain is touched by weather, but it does not become the weather. It remains connected to the earth. It remains steady, sturdy, and itself, even when there is wind, rain, fog, hail, or storm moving through.
In this guided experience, you are invited to work with spinal alignment as a somatic resource. The practice begins by helping you find an upright but comfortable seated position, sensing the base of the body, the feet on the floor, the pelvis, the spine, the shoulders, and the head. This gentle alignment is not about sitting perfectly or holding yourself rigidly. It is about allowing the body to find a more supported, stacked, upright rootedness, where the spine and gravity can help you feel steadier without efforting.
From there, the practice uses grounding, earth connection, and mountain imagery to support a felt sense of steadiness in the body. You are invited to sense the mountain through the feet, the base of the body, the vertical line of the spine, the breath, and the felt connection to the earth.
The practice then gently explores how to stay present in moments of clinical intensity without collapsing, rushing, over-functioning, or losing yourself. You are invited to notice a small clinical moment where the relational field felt intense, then return again and again to the mountain: the base, the spine, the body, the breath, the boundary, and the ground.
This is not about becoming rigid or unaffected. It is about practicing how to remain rooted, open, and clear.
Becoming the Mountain builds on the three-session arc of Steady in Your Seat:
Session One: Landing in Your Seat
A guided grounding practice for returning to your body, your seat, and your therapist role when you feel pulled into urgency, over-responsibility, self-doubt, or overthinking.
Session Two: Deep Water Within
A guided practice for accessing the wise therapist self beneath the busy surface mind, helping you soften, widen, listen, and meet uncertainty with more compassion and clinical perspective.
Session Three: Becoming the Mountain
A guided practice for staying steady in the storm, supporting rooted therapist presence when the relational field becomes intense.
This recording may be especially supportive before or after complex clinical work, during periods of self-doubt, or when you want to reconnect with a more grounded, upright, and boundaried sense of yourself as a therapist.
The core movement of this practice is: Root. Open. Hold. Return.
